Unlocking the iPhone 2G aka yPhone

by gannzter on Sep.14, 2009, under Tech stuff

So very recently, being the techie between me and my better half, I was given the task of updating her iPhone 2G. There were a couple of reasons why I recommended the update.

ACTIVATE NOW

Firstly, I had been impressed with the iPhone 3G I played with on my last visit to the iStore. The cut and paste feature particularly was real cool. I heard that if the 2G were upgraded, one could get that feature amongst other things. In addition, for some reason, the iPhone 2G did not feature the famous Apple APP Store. Having all of this in mind, I recommended an update.

The iPhone 2G in question was jail broken on purchase though. It is an unlocked version of the iPhone 2G and no one told me that they got brick walled when updated. Anyways, I updated my iTunes to 64bit 8.something version, and proceeded to update the what we have there after called the yPhone. Why did we decide to update again? This is a question I ended up asking myself dozens of times after the update. There is a saying I like, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”, but NO, we had decided to fix it.

After the phone had been updated, iTunes proceeded to check with the server only to declare that I needed to activate the phone with an appropriate sim card (at & t or O2). I was sweating in cold 2horse power air conditioning, my partner had my work Motorola Q9 for the day while I was to perform the update. Would she return my phone?

I got back home that evening to pick up my at & t go phone sim card and use it to attempt an activation - no  luck. My partner wasn’t broken as I expected, she gladly took my dodgy china Huawei phone as a temporary replacement. The timer was on.

For the next 5 days I was combing through every forum that had the word iPhone Unlock. I learnt new terms like jailbreak, brickwall, quick pwn, pawning .e.t.c.

At the end of it all, I found out about red sn0w (o is zero). Although it gave me some hassle because I was using Vista 64bit (did not work), I eventually got the phone unlocked, activated and jailbroken. Even the  youtube and app store worked. The copy and paste feature also came with the firmware update.

WinPwn 2.5 beta also does the job, updating the firmware to 3.0.  Red Sn0w only manages to update to 2.0.2 there about.

What you need for a decent jail break:

Boot loader 46 and 39

iPhone firmware 2.0.2

red Sn0w

Good luck on your jail break… and if you haven’t already, don’t UP-grade.

Light Up Nigeria#

by gannzter on Jul.18, 2009, under OFFICIAL, Blogroll

lightupnaijaIn the symbolic year of 1789, the French revolution kicked off, changing the face of Europe forever. It was the beginning of the French republic, the greatness of the French to come and the lighting of a new beacon in People power across the world. The revolution was fueled by discontent, the differences between the 1st Estate and the much larger 2nd & 3rd Estate. Some had abundance of food, abundance of land and abundance of wealth while others wallowed in lack and a hope for hopelessness. Land was a key factor, office was another key factor and the lack of opportunity were all important in getting the French people to say “enough is enough” on the lawns of Versailles. The Iphone 3Gs - Impressive 7* Quality

by gannzter on Jul.08, 2009, under Tech stuff

iphone3gs

The Iphone3Gs I was certainly skeptical about. Yesterday though, while I was in the mall with three ladies carried away in a jewelry store, I ended up in the Apple store. The truth of the matter is that I am not a huge fan of Apple. I think it is appalling that the “myphone” cost twenty bucks to make, but is sold at over two hundred. Yet, you have to say, those guys know all about differentiation. They know how to add value to a product so as to convince us all, to pay that lot more. (continue reading…)

MJ MICHAEL JACKSON & OUR END (Obituary)

by gannzter on Jun.25, 2009, under Admonition

GMy MJ no.1rowing up in Lagos… years after of Michael’s greatest hit “Thriller” I cannot rid myself of the love and adoration I had for him. I remember screaming “I’m bad” to school back in 1990. Oh it hurts hearing that the “man” if you call him that is dead! Oh yes I’m black but this hurts 10 times worse than the death of Tupac Shakur. To think the man who left my generation the thought that we are the world is dead!

We love you XP – but we have to leave you…

by gannzter on Jun.22, 2009, under Tech stuff

Now a lot of us are quite bitter about the several inefficiencies of Windows Vista and the fact that Microsoft even had the audacity to release what many of us think should have remained a beta version to the world. Buying new computers meant you got bugged down with it, in fact there is not enough room in this section to moan about the ills of Windows Vista.

The Battle for Empiricism in Africa

by gannzter on Jun.21, 2009, under Admonition

The word “empiricism” is aptly defined by the Madam Webster dictionary as “3: a theory that all knowledge originates in experience “. The word indeed comes from the Greek word “empeiria”. It can be asserted that Europe’s development into the great civilization which it has become owes a lot to ancient Greek empiricism.

The Merits and Demerits of E-Mail Clients

HAPPY CUSTOMER, HAPPY BANK

intercuntinentalWell thats what they say… but ask the GANNZTER and I’ll tell you categorically that unless Intercontinental Bank Plc. up their game, soon (could be in years) their shares on the local stock exchange would be worth diddly squat.

Ripped Jeans

by gannzter on Jun.01, 2007, under Chit chat

Fancy ripped jeansDo you have any jeans that just wore naturally at the knees? Or does everyone have to buy them at the stores worn at the knees. This was the golden thought that struck me a few moments after I decided to write for the denim edition of switched on naija. On the surface it might seem like uncanny banter but after some thought it would appear a serious question or even a series of serious questions.
